Kagalaska Island
Quail Cove
General. A narrow entrance that required a moderate sea or less to enter but well worth the effort. There is some kelp in the entrance but not enough to cause concern. Inside is a completely protected from all winds anchorage. Anchorage is in quite deep waters compared to many of the other anchorages around.
Reported. July 2003 by Fine Tolerance
Charts. NOAA 16471, large scale chart NOAA 16477.
Approach. There are many rocks around the outer entrance which in a large swell would make this anchorage impossible to enter. There are some narrow parts before the bay opens out but by keeping to the middle all should be alright.
Anchoring. Anywhere in this cove seems to be OK. We anchored in mud on a mud bottom in 20 meters at 51° 45.4 N, 176° 19.8 W in company with the US cruising yacht ‘Dreamtime’ and the Adak harbour master who had run around for some salmon fishing.
Points of Interest. Salmon fishing in season. While we were there Kirsten, the crew member on 'Dreamtime', took a 3 hr walk around the lake which is situated above the large waterfall at the head of the bay. The below photo shows a common sight in the Aleutians. Clear skies over the land with fog hanging just offshore.
