Unalaska Island
Dutch Harbour.
General. This is the center of commercial activity in the Aleutian Islands and the only proper port of entry in the Aleutians. There is a large fishing fleet stationed here. Flights come in every day. Repairs are available for electrical, electronic, mechanical and all aspects of commercial boating. Fuel, oil and propane are all available. There are also two well stocked supermarkets in town. This is a busy port with all sizes of vessels active. We only called in for three hours for some fuel and supplies for the sail across to Prince Rupert.
Reported. August 2003 by Fine Tolerance
Charts. NOAA 16500, NOAA 16520, NOAA 16528, large scale chart NOAA 16528, NOAA 16529 and NOAA 16530.
Approach. There are no off-lying dangers. The entrance is wide and is marked with maintained navigational buoys.
Anchoring. There are marinas and wharfs aplenty in Iliuliuk Harbour but space is at a premium. There are no facilities in Dutch Harbour for a small vessel to permantly tie up. The harbour master is available on Ch 16.
Points of Interest. If you are coming in from the west here are all the trappings of western civilization, fresh donuts and the works. If you are coming from the east then this is the last place to stock up on fresh fruit, vegetables and goodies.
Looking up the channel. The breakwater of Dutch Harbour is to the left.
