Kodiak

Kodiak Small-Boat harbour.

General.    There is a 24 hr VHF radio watch here. You can call the Harbour Master up on CH16 and check on the availability of a berth. We suggest the harbour next to the town as all boat facilities and supplies are just a short walk away. The newer harbour on Near Island is a long ways from town. This is the largest town in the area and with it's large fishing fleet every nautical repair can be undertaken. There is good shopping with two food supermarkets and a Wal-Mart as well as many smaller shops.

Reported.    July 2004 by Fine Tolerance

Charts.    NOAA 16580,  NOAA 16595.

Approach.    There are rocks, shoals and Islands from which ever direction you come from. You need a chart and to follow it carefully. There is plenty of room between all the obstacles though and you shouldn't experience any problems provided the weather is fine. The Harbor Master will be able to direct you to your berth. We are not sure of the high of the bridge if you enter via the dredged channel but we fitted under with ease. Our mast head is 17 meters (56 ft) off the water .

Anchoring.    We took a berth in this harbour.

Points of Interest.   This is your last chance to re-supply at reasonable prices if traveling west or northward. There is internet available at the library.
